A lighting of pain across your chest, trying to regulate your breath. Dilated pupils and sweaty palms. Every second you feel your body withering down. Fog rolling in, mind shutting down. Searching for a focal point, hoping to gain control again. Quieting the voice in your head telling you, you are in danger. Panting, repeating the words “it’s ok, I am ok!” Numb, empty and intrusive thoughts overcome you. You now stand in the storm. The sky painted grey, waves of emotions and minutes feel like hours. Sleepless nights, nightmares or the random panic attacks. You are constantly at war with yourself.
Sometimes you can be doing an every day task and a simple thing can instantly deteorite your body. Some are triggered by sounds, by a certain person or place. It feels as if someone shot you in the heart while simultaneously choking you and your in this instant panic. That if you don’t have much practice on how to deal with these moments it consumes you.
PTSD is a well known diagnosis for someone who has served or serves in the military. But, there are so many that go through trauma and never have symptoms until one day, that one moment where the light switch turns off and your life changes. We tend to suppress certain events that happen in our lives as a survival mechanism. We normalize our trauma and go about our days. It’s as if you are a balloon and the air you blow in a balloon is your pain. You blow into a balloon, avoiding it at all cause, until one day there is too much air in the balloon, what happens? It pops! That’s where the anxiety, depression, anger and every or any emotion you have avoided comes out. With help it is manageable but never gone.
The diagnosis, whatever that may be, ISN’T you it’s just a part of you, that you didn’t choose. As much as you don’t want to relive another moment in distress, just remember as long as you are putting the work in healing, IT GETS BETTER!
If you ever come across someone with PTSD, be kind, be patient and understand that if you aren’t the one who caused the pain, don’t take it personal. They are working through it.
